Required Training
Prospective foster and adoptive families are required to complete 27 hours of pre-service training as part of the application process. Every adult in a household who would be a parent for a foster or adoptive child is required to attend pre-service training.
The Collaborative Foster Care Program provides 27 hours of pre-service training at no cost. Our training series covers a variety of topics related to caring for children who have experienced trauma, grief and loss. It also covers important aspects of working with the child welfare system and expectations of foster and adoptive parents.
Pre-service training includes:
- 8-week series
- 3 hours each week (weeknights, 6-9 p.m.)
- A light meal will be provided each week
- Child care is not provided
- RSVP is required

- The Court System
- Attachment to Birth Parents
- Children's Grief Process
- Long-Term Consequences of Trauma and Separation
- Impact of Abuse and Neglect on Child Development
- Impacts of Sexual Abuse
- Discipline and Behavioral Management Techniques
- Cultural Needs
- Working as a Part of the Child and Family Team
- Adoption

NOTE: Due to the nature of materials and information covered, children and youth may not attend information night or pre-service trainings.
Ongoing Training
After completing pre-service training and becoming a certified home, foster parents are required to complete 20 hours of ongoing education each year and maintain an annual training log. Adoptive parents are encouraged to pursue ongoing training.
Resources for training and other educational materials will be provided by your assigned worker. As part of the re-certification process, your assigned worker will assist in ensuring all necessary paperwork and documents are up-to-date and accurate.
